The Netherlands is one of the first countries to come up with a clear solution of what happens to the British citizens after Brexit. According to Dutch foreign affairs minister Stef Blok, British nationals living in the Netherlands will be able to remain there in case of a no-deal Brexit. However, they will have to apply for a special residence permit.
All UK nationals living in the Netherlands, have been issued temporary residence permits for the period before 29 March 2019. With no additional actions required.
Transitional period 29 March 2019 – 1 July 2020
In the event of no deal Brexit, Dutch government will bring in a 15-month transitional period, during which all British nationals will maintain the rights to reside, work and study in the country.
From 1 July 2020
After the transitional period, all UK nationals will must obtain a definitive residency permit if they wish to lawfully remain in the Netherlands. It will be granted to everyone who meets current residency requirements for the EU nationals and cost €57.
UK nationals with a permanent EU residence document
UK nationals who possess a permanent EU residence document will need to apply for the national one nonetheless. However, they will be issued free of charge. Affected individuals will receive a letter from IND requesting to set an appointment to collect their permanent Dutch residency card.
UK nationals with another EU-nationality (dual citizenship)
UK nationals with another EU passport do not need to take any specific measures to preserve their right of residence in the Netherlands.
UK nationals entering the Netherlands after 29 March 2019
Although UK nationals entering the Netherlands after 29 March 2019 will need to apply for the residency and work authorisation, no entry visa will be required.
UK nationals in possession of permanent residency permit will continue to enjoy the allowances for health care, childcare, rent and travel after 29 March 2019.
